How Many Appetizers for a Party?

Before a meal, plan 6 appetizer pieces per person. If appetizers ARE the meal (cocktail party), plan 12+ pieces per person and more variety as the guest list grows.

The reliable ratio: one cold and easy option (cheese board, veggies) per two hot passed items — cold platters absorb the rush while hot trays cycle.

Adjusting for your crowd: kids eat about two-thirds of adult portions; knock 25% off any single item when several mains share the table; add 25% for teenagers and big appetites. When in doubt, round up on the cheap items (buns, chips, ice) and stay exact on the expensive ones.
